More on Harbor Freight
Harbor Freight was founded by Allan and Eric Smidt—a father-and-son duo—in 1977. Its first incarnation was a mail-order business operating out of North Hollywood.
After a while, the Smidts found a way to get the most mileage out of their funding. They decided to procure their tools straight from factories—a move that allowed them to save a significant amount of money. They then sold these tools at a reasonable price, much to the delight of their customers.
With the opening of their first physical store in 1980, the Smidts continued to expand the Harbor Freight brand. Harnessing the potent business combination of a steadily growing product catalog and consistently low prices, Harbor Freight staked its claim as America’s go-to store for handy equipment.
After Eric Smidt became the sole owner of the company in 1999, he continued to invest in processes and strategies that would propel Harbor Freight to even greater heights. On the quality assurance end, he tapped a team of experts and created sophisticated labs to test every product offering. Though the Great Recession drove the final nail in the coffin of several businesses, he ensured the well-being of Harbor Freight by installing a strong leadership. This elite team helped the company navigate the stormy waters of the U.S. economy in the late 2000s.
Unwavering in its commitment to excellence, Harbor Freight has raised the bar high for customer experience and employee experience. In 2020 and 2021, it was named a Top Diversity Employer by DiversityJobs.com. Around that time, the company was also recognized by Forbes as one of the nation’s Best Employers for Veterans.
