More on Berlitz
This company is named after its founder, Maximilian Berlitz, a German immigrant who entered the U.S. language teaching system in 1870.
Yes, you read that right: The company he founded has been in business since the late 19th century!
Early on, Berlitz distinguished his language teaching venture by employing a unique approach called the Berlitz Method. Here’s the interesting story behind this approach: During a teaching stint in Providence, Berlitz fell ill and temporarily relinquished the teaching duties in his French class to his assistant Joly. This assistant, by the way, hailed from France.
French language lessons taught by a French person—that makes perfect sense, right? The challenge was that Joly didn’t speak a word of English yet had to handle Berlitz’s American students for six weeks.
When Berlitz returned to work, he was preparing to fill learning gaps. To his surprise, his students had become impressively fluent in French! Berlitz then realized that Joly’s communication with the students—which had been 100% in French—created an effective learning environment for the learners to pick up the target language.
Keen to replicate this success, Berlitz went on to pioneer the Berlitz Method, which facilitated language instruction in an immersive, goal-oriented manner. For more than a century now, the Berlitz company has provided outstanding language-teaching services to a highly diverse client base. These clients include individuals of all ages, government agencies, and businesses (among them household names such as Bloomberg, Colgate-Palmolive, and Abbott).
If Berlitz and Joly could see the heights this language-teaching venture has scaled, they’d probably say—with an immaculate French accent—“C’est magnifique!”
